Lesson Procedure
Session 1:
(1) Ask student to wrap his or her shoebox with any paper (wrapping paper, contact paper, etc.) that they like. The box should reflect something about themselves or something they like. Be sure the lid of the box is wrapped separately so the box can be opened and closed. (This step can be done as homework).
(2) Guide the student to fill the box with all "that is me" (traits, likes, dislikes, interests, talents, strengths, and weaknesses). Contents may be in written form (on small sheets of paper) or may be objects/photographs/pictures that symbolize traits. Praise the student's observations. Add an observation of your own.
Option: Invite students to find a partner and allow partners to work together, offering ideas and observations for each other.
(3) Reflect on the many things that make up an individual.
Session 2:
(4) Revisit the "This is Me" boxes. Invite students to consider these and other questions:
* Can I add more to my box?
* Should I change what is in here?
* Are there things I hide from others?
* Should I share other things with people?
* How and why should I market myself to others?
Ongoing Session: Periodically revisit the "This is Me" boxes, encouraging students to share with others.
For younger students, wrapping the box may need to be done at home with parental help. Discuss questions may also vary according to level of students.

Comments/Instructor's Note
This lesson can be used with an individual student or with a class. The activity allows students to explore their strengths, affinities and areas of concern and how they "market" themselves to other students.
