Lesson Procedure
Students participate in 5 learning centers to help enhance long-term memory consolidation skills. Centers should be designed around a current curriculum theme (e.g., Volcanoes) to help children remember curriculum.
Center 1: Provide list of 25 terms related to volcanoes. Assignment: Create a song using at least 10 terms from the list provided to the tune of "Mary had a Little Lamb" (or other familiar song).
Center 2: Provide example of acrostic for past study topic (e.g. tornado).
Assignment: Create an acrostic with the word "volcano". All words should apply to the curriculum.
Center 3: Provide sample story.
Assignment: Write (and illustrate) a short story about a volcano using key concepts of the curriculum.
Center 4: Cut out and mount on cardboard pictures of the sequence of a volcano eruption.
Assignment: Put the pictures in order and explain the sequence in writing.
Center 5: Print list of 20-30 volcano terms. Cut into individual words and put set of terms in envelope .
Assignment: Group the terms in the envelope into categories. Write the categories and the terms on paper, then shuffle the terms and put them back in the envelope for the next person.
Debrief: In the last fifteen minutes reflect together on how the centers enhanced memory. Discuss how to study better using similar strategies. Be sure to intentionally remember long-term memory.
