Lesson Procedure
Anticipatory set:
Tell the students that they are going to learn about how their brain remembers things. As an example, they will be shown a dance routine that they will be asked to remember.
Procedure:
(1) Have students count off (for example by 5’s) and arrange themselves in rows by number.
(2) Demonstrate routine (repeat each step and continue to build on the last step) repeat for mastery.
(3) After routine, ask students to work together with other members of their team (all the 1's together, all the 2's together, etc.) to answer the following questions:
* How did you remember the routine?
* What strategies did you use?
* What made this memory exercise challenging?
* What would you do differently if you had to do this again?
(4) Instruct students on active working memory. Discuss ways active working memory is used in schools.
(5) Discuss: How will you transfer this dance into your LTM to remember for next time?
(6) Repeat routine.
Debrief (checking for understanding)
