Books- I Like Me and I Am Freedom's Child
Mirrors / crayons/ paper
Materials
Lesson Procedure
The teacher reads I Like Me, discussing the attributes of the character that the character herself finds as strengths. We then as a class talk about the things we are good at. The teacher gives some of her own strenghts as a model. When the children have come up with some ideas give each child a mirror and let him or her draw themselves. The teacher adds a word bubble taking dictation so that the child gives his own strengths coming from his mouth.
During the follow-up activity the teacher reads I am Freedom's Child. Then the children share their strengths and talk about how we can use them to help each other.
Later during the year children may want to add to their strengths. If a child is having a hard time during the year we could refer back to his strengths. We could also refer to others' strengths which might be of some help to that child.
