Teacher Preparation Cubes (1 red, 2 blue, 3 yellow)
Tactile numbers (red 1, blue 2, yellow 3) (In other words, coordinate the colors of the cubes with the colors of the numbers.)
Materials
Lesson Procedure 1) Hold up the red cube; pair it with the tactile number one. (Identify attributes, i.e., "Look, this cube is the same color as the number one.")
2) Hold up the 2 blue cubes. Have the child hold a cube in each hand. Make associations (i.e., two hands, two feet, two eyes). Pair with the blue numeral 2.
3) Compare the 1 red cube with the 2 blue cubes. Ask the child which is bigger (or more). Reteach if necessary.
4) Show the 3 yellow cubes. Give the child 2 cubes; keep the third yourself. Say the rhyme "Two for you, one for me. Put them together, and now we have three." Pair with the yellow numeral 3. 5) Remove all cubes.
6) Have the child trace (with finger) the numeral 1 and place 1 cube next to the numeral.
7)Repeat process with 2 and 3. Invite the child to repeat the rhyme.
