Make flashcards. I used index cards with the letters printed boldly in different color markers. I traced over the letters with Elmers glue and set the cards out to dry over night. The glue dries clear and you can see the letter underneath but the children can also "feel" the number by having the dried glue on, top. They can slide their finger across the letter and say it's name to help them memorize their letters. My partner has her class write down their spelling words on flashcards to be used for their game but they do not use the glue, just writing with pencil or markers. Any "facts" that you want memorized can be used on flashcards for this game. It can be used for numbers and math facts, too.

Lesson Procedure
-Each child gets 5 alphabet cards to lay in front of them in a straight row. - The teacher or helper calls out a word. - If the student has the letter that makes the beginning sound of the word called out, they slide their card down to form a new row below. - The game continues. -The winner is the first person to slide down all 5 of their cards to the second row. -I am using this game to help my students who are having trouble remembering their letter names and sounds.
- My partner teaches 1st grade. She uses the "slide it down" game by using spelling words on flashcards instead of alphabet letters. -The students make flashcards with their weekly spelling words. -Only 5 are handed out to each student. - When she calls out one of the spelling words for that week, if the student has that particular card in front of them, they slide their card down and spell the word out loud while looking at the card.
