Subject Area

Objectives

Estimated Time Needed

60 minutes
Teacher Preparation Balance beam
Heavy object (15-pound bag of rice)
Origami paper for folding
Visual cue for folding the paper (This paricular paper fold would be very familiar because it would have been previously taught.)
A sentence to copy and paper to copy it on to
Copies of a maze to complete
Pencil
Two tables (one for origami, one for maze and copying sentence)
Chart paper for debriefing
Classroom that is set up with three stations
Materials
Lesson Procedure -The classroom set up into three stations. (This could be done outside if the weather cooperates.)

-Divide the students into three groups. Each group should start with a different activity.

-When a student has finished with one activity, he/she should move on to the next activity.

-A rotation sequence should be established.

-Three Activities:
1. Gross Motor
The students are to walk across a balance beam. First, cross the balance beam with nothing in your hands. Then walk across the balance beam carrying a 15 pound bag of rice or some other similarly heavy object.

2. Fine Motor
The students are given paper and directions for folding origami paper in a specific manner.

3. Graphomotor
The students are to complete a maze and then copy a sentence on a piece of paper.

Debriefing
After all the students have completed each of the activities, gather them together to debrief the activities they have just completed. Discuss the three types of neuromotor functioning. Ask the following questions to help the student detemine which activity was related to which neuromotor function:

What is the same about all of these activities?
What is different about all of these activities?
Which activity did you like the most?
Which activity was the easiest for you?
Which activity was the most difficult for you?
What type of muscles did you use to walk across the balance beam?
Was it easier to walk across the beam with the bag of rice or without it?
What type of muscles did you use to fold the origami paper?
What types of muscles were used to do the maze and write the sentence?
Was it easier to complete the maze or write the sentence?

What was the difference between folding the paper, doing the maze and writing the sentence?

Other similar questions will be asked during the debriefing to help students realize what elements of Neuromotor Functioning (Gross Motor, Fine Motor, and Graphomotor) are being used to complete each of the three activities.
